Nathalie Fiset asked:

Credit companies always appeal to consumers who have poor credit history and they often promise to erase bad credit, to clean credit reports and even create new legal identity. But can they really help in repairing bad credit history?

Here are some points to consider when deciding on seeking any help from credit repair companies:

-	They collect payment for services in advance before they provide any solutions

- They do not inform you of what they can do for free; they even conceal the information regarding your legal rights.

-	They advice you not to directly contact your credit report company.

- They recommend you to create a new credit report and new credit identity using the employer identification number rather than social security number.

-	They suggest that you hide all information about your credit report.

Check on the above scams because engaging in something fraudulent can lead to your prosecution.

The truth is that no company can legally and accurately remove all bad records on your credit report.

According to FCRA or Fair Credit Reporting Act you can actually ask for a free credit report when a company acts adversely against you. For example, you are denied of your application for credit or insurance.

Basically, there are techniques on how to repair your credit:

1.	Review and always get a copy of your credit report. Even though you have no bad credit record, you should review your credit report regularly. This will be useful to ensure that all contained information is correct, up to date and complete, and check on the information in your credit report that will affect your insurance or loan application and what amount will you pay for them. It will guard you against someone who utilizes your personal information such as identity thieves.

2.	Analyze your credit report. This can let you see if there are inaccurate entries or negative listings. Most of the entries are not easily looked upon, such as medical collection. In addition, there are those reporting late payment although you have paid on time. Analyzing your report will let you ensure that no thieves are stealing your identity and using it for illegal transactions.

3.	Make an entry of all the items which you find to be negative or questionable. Identify the negative and positive items on your credit report. You should also rank these items from the least to the most damaging information. Examples are:

- Foreclosure

- Repossession

- Collections

- Credit rejections

- Late payments

- Bankruptcy

- Court judgments

- Loan default

- Past due payments

- Credit inquiries

Take note that if your company does not notify you of the bad information that will be placed on your report, they are clearly violating the FCRA. You can use this act against them and you can immediately ask them to remove the negative listings.

4.	Create a dispute letter addressed to the credit bureaus. Indicate the reasons why you disagree on the report and check all the items that you are questioning. You can ask for every detail that you found disputable, but you will have a hard time to get foreclosures and bankruptcies off your credit report. Be sure that the letter is sent certified or registered. This is important so that you can be sure when the letters are sent and received. The letter will also give you rights when the company will not respond on the prescribed time by the law.

5.	Have a record of all your transactions; document the date when you send letters and what are the results. Track down your correspondences and have it organized. You should also note all the telephone conversations from the date and time, name of the person you talked to, her/ his position, what transpired in your conversation.

6.	Let the credit bureau investigate your claims and wait for the results. Once the agency receives your letter, they are obliged to investigate it. The agency will have to resolve the dispute within 30 days, after which, the consumer shall receive written notification of the results. If the investigation results reveals error again, you can request for revision of the report

7.	Evaluate the results. The credit bureau will summarize the revisions it made on your report. Compare your notes with the list from the bureau to check if the results are accurate.

8.	Repeat the initial steps if you are not satisfied with how your disputes are settled. Reinvestigation is free, so request for it anytime you want.

Persistence and patience are needed because not all credit bureaus are cooperative. Once your credit report is repaired, creditors will come to see your good financial standing again.

Megan

Ryan J. Taylor asked:

Everyone has at least a few things on their credit report that they may not necessarily be proud of. But these negative marks do not have to remain on your report. There are some quick, easy strategies you can follow to wipe your credit clean and instantly boost your score as much as 100 points.

By removing the negative items on your file, you’ll increase your credit rating, which is a good thing for many reasons. Beyond helping you get approved for loans, your score is important because it is reviewed by employers, landlords, and even your auto insurance rate is determined by your score. In addition, credit card companies will not only determine how much your rates are, but how high your spending limits are.

The first step to quickly remove the negative items that are hurting your personal credit rating is to pull all three of your credit reports and review them carefully. Three out of four credit reports contain errors that don’t belong there, and identifying these mistakes can allow you to instantly increase your score.

There may be something as minor as a misspelling in your address or previous employer, but you want to specifically look for accounts in collection that don’t belong to you, credit cards that are listed as late that you closed years ago, and other delinquencies that are just not true. By law, these mistakes must be removed and your credit score will increase. However, because each of your reports list different items, it is critical to review all three files closely.

Johnny

Wesley Atkins asked:

Do you have a poor credit rating? If so, you are one of tens of thousands of Americans with the same problem. In fact, it seems that this has become a national ‘disease.’ And just what do people need that have a disease? They need a cure.

Here are some sure-fire solutions to ‘ repair bad credit ‘. Keep in mind, like most ‘diseases,’ credit repair can take some time, but complete healing is possible.

The First Step

The first thing you need to do is find out what is being reported about you. This is easy and inexpensive. For under $10, you can get your credit report from one of the three main credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. Keep in mind however, that if you have recently been denied credit, you can get a free report from the same credit bureau the lender used to reject you as long as you do so within 30 days.

What You Don’t Need

You don’t need a repair clinic. Why? There is no legal way to ‘repair’ your credit. Those that claim to know loopholes and shortcuts are merely out for your money. They may even get you into legal trouble by having you fudge the facts or creating a whole new file for you. Anything legal that a clinic can do, you can do just as easily and without the cost of ‘professional’ help.

Further Steps to Take

1. Stop using your credit cards immediately. Put them somewhere where they will not tempt you. You may consider keeping at least one card for emergency purposes. Additionally, with poor credit, you may find it more difficult to get a credit card in the future. If you keep at least one account open, then you won’t have to worry about applying.

2. Be Honest With Yourself. Taking a good hard look at your financial situation, particularly if it isn’t good, can be very difficult. Yet, to get out debt you have to fully understand what the situation is.

3. Find the Errors. Believe it or not, up to 40% of all credit reports have errors in them. If you find that your credit report shows something that is not true, you need to write to them with all the details. Be sure to use certified mail so that you can keep track of who you wrote to, when you wrote, and who received the mail on the credit bureau’s end. Then ask the credit bureau to send a corrected report to anyone who has requested a report on you in the last 6 months.

4. Find the Omissions. By law, you are allowed to add information to your report that you believe will help your rating. This might be additional information about a repayment of a loan, good credit you have with companies that do not report to the credit bureau, or salary increases.

5. You Must Have a Plan. Whether you determine to pay your bills down little at a time, take a second job, go to credit counseling, or file bankruptcy, you need to make a plan and stick to it. In order for your credit to be improved, you have to have a plan and then take action!

6. Talk to those that you owe. Creditors want their money. They do not want you to default (quit paying). In fact, most creditors will work with you to get a reduced payment schedule. If you can keep them from reporting you to the credit bureau, then it won’t hurt your credit. The catch here is this: be sure to stick to the new negotiated plan – they won’t renegotiate if you fail to comply.

7. The Best Cure is Time. Have you ever heard the saying ‘time heals all wounds’? It also heals your credit. After 7 years, most items will be dropped. This is good news if you are working to correct your credit. As each year passes, more and more bad items will drop off and more and more good items will be included. Eventually, the disease will be cured.

Follow these steps and you will find that your credit looks healthier and healthier each day. Eventually this path will lead you to full recovery. Good Luck!

Amy

Michael G. Harris asked:

After trying to borrow money and getting rejected, many people have said, “I need to clean my credit up!” But how can you do this? Believe it or not, there really is a way to correct the mistakes of the past and get your life back in order. Read on and discover how to clean bad credit by using 3 simple steps.

First, you need to obtain a copy of your credit report. You can obtain credit reports for free, once a year, from the 3 major credit agencies by going to AnnualCreditReport.com. Since over 80% of credit reports have mistakes, you want to look for certain errors to fix. Look for accounts that aren’t yours, balance errors, and late payment mistakes. If you find something that needs to be corrected, simply write a letter to the agency and let them know about it. Many times, they’ll fix the mistake on your report which will raise your score by several points.

Second, avoid late payments. If you’ve made late payments in the past, this has probably hurt your score. Instead, get organized by keeping your bills together in one place and writing the due dates on a calendar. Then, once a week, sit down and figure out which bills need to be paid for the upcoming week. Be sure to prioritize by paying house, cars, and credit card payments first. These are the ones that affect your credit score the most. By paying these bills on time, you can boost your credit rating when the agencies look at current payment history.

Third, if you are currently behind on payments, call your creditors up and explain to them your situation Let them know that you are having financial difficulty right now but want to make payments on time. In many cases, they can structure your monthly payment differently so that you are no longer in default. This will go a long way in cleaning up your bad credit report. Of course, only use this step if you can’t pay your bills on time.

Cleaning up your credit report is something that you can do yourself. Be careful about companies who claim to have the ability to repair your credit for you. Many of these companies scam consumers out of hundreds of dollars per year and do nothing for them. If you’ve been wondering how to clean bad credit, remember that only you have the ability to fix your credit. It will not fix itself.

Joanne

Vincent Polisi asked:

If you want to learn how to fix credit fast, then you will want to read this article. Specifically, we will be discussing the first thing you need to do and what options you have to raise your score. When you are finished reading this article, you should be prepared to begin credit restoration.

Review Your Report

The first thing in any credit repair plan is to carefully review your file. You can get a copy of each of your three credit reports once a year at annualcreditreport.com. If you have already received your free report this year, or you want to get a copy of your credit score, you will need to pay a small fee for your report. There are companies that will give you your score for free up front, but this involves a trial membership in a monitoring service. These services can be a good idea if you are attempting credit repair, but just make sure you understand the associated costs.

Decide Which Strategies Will Work Best for You

Once you have your report, you will want to review your file carefully. It is a good idea to make an extra copy so that you can highlight all of the items that you feel need attention. Make special note of anything that is incorrect or questionable. Once you have reviewed your report it is time to develop a plan!

o	Pay Off Revolving Debt

One of the quickest and easiest ways to improve your credit score is to pay off your revolving debt. Your credit utilization makes up 30% of your credit score. By getting each of your account balances at down below 25% of your available credit, you can raise your credit score by up to 50 points.

o	Dispute Derogatory Credit and Errors

The Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the right to dispute anything in your credit that you believe is inaccurate. If a creditor fails to verify an account within 30 days, the credit bureaus must remove the account from your credit file.

o	Get a Relative to Add You as an Authorized User

Many people think that due to FICO 08 that becoming an authorized user can no longer help your credit score. This is actually not true. While FICO 08 does restrict who can add someone as an authorized user, it does not prevent a parent or spouse from helping your credit by adding you as an authorized user.

Daniel

Paul Sarwana asked:

Many people find themselves trapped in bad credit due to various reasons, some due to misfortune while others suffer from this problem because of mismanagement of finances. No matter what may be the reason for bad credit, it is important for every individual to rebuild their credit rating.

As many people have successfully repaired their credit themselves you can effectively repair your credit yourself — without the help of a professional — even if you have a nasty bad credit. However, as bad credit repair takes times, you will need some patience and strong will power to get yourself out of your problems.

As you may already know there are three top credit bureaus, they are TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax. First, start out by getting credit reports and see what the various bureaus have to say about you. These credit reports shall be able to give you a somewhat clear picture of your credit history.

Once you have your credit reports, it is crucial for you to go through them thoroughly and pay attention to every intricate detail. In most cases, every consumer has at least one error on one credit report if not more; some may even have multiple errors on all three credit reports. This situation arises because the reports are created using the information provided by various creditors and the bureaus do not verify each piece of information provided to them.

There are several errors that are most commonly found on credit reports like old information, typing errors etc. Identify such errors in your report if any and make sure to report to the bureau, also have it removed at the earliest. Doing this can work wonders for your credit.

Taking informed decisions will no doubt help you turn your bad credit into good credit. For this, you would need to stop the habit of late payments. Ensure that you repay on time if not before scheduled time. By making sure that your repayments are smooth and without any flaws, your bad credit would soon convert to good credit.

Also, it is a good idea to keep your credit accounts to a maximum of 2 or 3. A huge number of accounts would get difficult to handle. Once you close all the additional accounts over a period of several months, make sure to report these accounts “closed” to the credit reporting agencies.

Martha

Patsy Rose asked:

The consumer has legal right regarding the information that is reported to and stored by the credit bureaus. Credit repair specialists help consumers take full advantage of their legal rights.

How can I repair my credit report? If any information on your credit report is inaccurate, out-dated, unverifiable or misleading, you can dispute this information. Credit repair specialists can help you if you do not have the time or the know-how.

Will establishing “good credit” repair my credit report? While establishing good credit is always a good idea, even if that means obtaining a secured credit card, “good credit” does not outweigh “bad credit”. Most lenders look at your overall credit score, most evaluations are done by computer these days, so if you credit score is below a certain number you may not qualify for lower interest rates, or you may be denied credit completely. Reputable credit repair specialists should evaluate your individual situation, before promising results.

Can I repair may credit report on my own? Yes, it just takes time and patience.

Can I repair my credit report if I still have outstanding debts? No. While you may be able to have negative items removed, if the debt is still owed, the creditor may just report the information again. Reputable credit repair specialists do not recommend that you try to have items removed from your credit reports which are accurate, only that information which is inaccurate, misleading, unverifiable or out-dated.

Can I repair may credit report if I have declared bankruptcy? It is possible that you may be able to achieve some results if you have declared bankruptcy. Many people believe that bankruptcy wipes their credit report clean, but it only releases you from overwhelming debt. It does not remove information from the credit report that led to the bankruptcy in the first place. If you have a past bankruptcy and you are trying to improve your credit rating, it might be wise to contact credit repair specialists that are associated with a law firm. They will probably be able to offer more assistance than credit repair specialists that are credit counselors.

Where do I go to view my credit report? The website http://www.annualcreditreport.com has been set up to allow consumers to easily view their credit reports on line. Companies that advertise as credit repair specialists and attempt to charge you for copies of your credit report are not being honest. If you need more than one copy of your credit report per year, then you may have to pay for additional reports, but this payment should be made directly to the credit bureau.

Can credit repair specialists repair my credit report for me? They can help. You will be involved throughout the process, because the credit bureau will only communicate directly with you.

Lewis
